Nursing Degree Programs

The nursing profession has been around for a very long time. It is a profession that is considered more of a calling than just a career. It's also considered a very noble profession that has never had enough workers. The reason it is considered more of a calling is the fact that at the point of caring for people you are bound to be required to go an extra mile to help them recover. It is also very likely that you will become emotionally attached to your patients in the course of your work. The empathy you have for patients' families will also drain you and sometimes leave you vulnerable to trauma and or the family members taking advantage of you.

However beyond the passion and caring nature, one requires sound academic qualifications to make a good nurse. There are various nursing degree programs that will ensure you have the requisite theoretical and practical training. Unlike earlier years' nursing which was considered a non academic field that only called for compassion for the sick, today nursing is a very academic intense profession with programs from certificate, nursing degree programs, masters and doctorate levels.

There are several avenues for joining the nursing profession. One can begin by studying for a nursing diploma or for a two year nursing associate program both of which concentrate on the technical aspects of nursing. However today it is more common and advisable - due to market demands - to pursue a nursing degree program for individuals starting out a career in nursing. A nursing degree program is also a good option for those with associate nurse qualifications but wish to advance their knowledge as well as their careers.

Studying for a nursing degree program will open up numerous career opportunities. There is a huge short fall of nurses in the public institutions. This option makes it easier to chart out a career path in the area that you are most comfortable in and where one has a keen interest.

The areas of specialization in nursing degree programs include cardiovascular care, pediatric care, neonatal care, surgery and primary care. In a general nursing class the subjects you expect to learn include: nursing skills, biological sciences, social studies, clinical theory and research methods. Nursing degree programs whether general or specialized require a great interest in biological studies and a passion for clinical studies.

The nursing profession is not for the weak willed. It demands long working hours, passion and will tax you emotionally. As much as nursing has become a lucrative career the world over due to shortages of nurses against an ever growing demand, nursing should be for those with an inner motivation to help patients. Pursuing a nursing degree program is the easier part however working as a professional nurse requires full dedication. The beauty of it is that it is extremely rewarding with very visible success results.

Online Business Degrees For Success

American employers are increasingly turning to job candidates who have solid business training to help build profitability in a competitive landscape. Even government agencies are looking for candidates who hold business degrees. If you're looking to develop keen skills and instincts, online business degree programs can help you write your own ticket to a rewarding career.

The advantages of pursuing an online business degree are exceptional: you can dovetail your learning with your existing work and family life without compromising them. All you need is Internet access, the drive to succeed, and you're on your way. Some employers may even pay full or partial tuition for employees attending an online business school.

Business Degrees and Careers

For those just entering the professions, an undergraduate online business degree in finance, or accounting can help launch your career. Classes for two- and four-year programs are available 24/7 from your desktop. Gaining a general, thorough understanding of business practices, principles, and software can make you an attractive candidate in most every industry.

You may even choose to specialize in emerging fields of eCommerce, international trade, global management, entrepreneurship, consulting, and change management, pursuing a graduate degree or online MBA that prepares you for organizational leadership.

Management analysts and personal financial advisors are among the fastest-growing career groups in the nation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that new jobs for personal finance advisors should grow by an astounding 37 percent during the 2006-2016 decade, with positions for management analysts rising by 22 percent. Both positions have high earnings upsides, but do require post-graduate training.

Thriving in Sales or Marketing

You can also profit from online business school training if you're planning on entering the sales or marketing verticals. You can earn an online business degree with a concentration in sales. The BLS reports that sales managers who combine a degree with key experience took home a median salary of $94,910 in 2007.
Marketing managers should find a healthy 12 percent growth in jobs between 2006 and 2016, according to the BLS. Jobs for graduates can be found in finance, banking, manufacturing, healthcare, and the tech sector. In 2007, marketing managers earned a median income of $104,000.

Business Degrees: Other Fields to Pursue

You can also pursue online specializations in human resource management, working as a recruiting or benefits specialist in the corporate or government sector--or work as an independent head-hunter and consultant. The BLS predicts a 17 percent increase in jobs for HR professionals between 2006 and 2016. You can get started in the field with as little as an associate's degree, although most companies are looking for bachelor's or MBA degrees.

Business training can improve your value in the workplace as well as prepare you for working as an independent, opening your own small business, or partnering with another entrepreneur. If you're already working in a niche career, adding online business training can help you advance within the company.

Online RN Degree: Study On Your Own Schedule

The online RN degree is the perfect degree for anyone who is interested in switching their career and working toward a career in nursing. The online aspect of the program allows for anyone to get the core education that they need to take on entry level nursing jobs. There are a few things to keep in mind with online courses, as you must work to understand similarities and differences between the two.

The courses that you will take through an online program are going to be the same as the courses that you take during a normal nursing program. You will follow the same course load and will take the same amount of time that it takes registered nurses to receive their degree. While it is possible to receive a strong education and go into an entry level job after two years, registered nurses will go through four years of education. The courses that you should expect to take while in an online nursing course include basic science courses like anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and microbiology. Students should expect to take other courses related to the field, including psychology, nutrition, and basic nursing courses.

While it is possible for you to study online for your degree, you must get into real-world practice through clinical hours and lab hours. If you wish to become certified you are going to need to go through supervised clinical hours that generally occur in hospitals and other healthcare offices and facilities. You must work with your online school to understand where you may go to get these different clinical hours.

If you wish to become a registered nurse you must make sure that the online course that you take is accredited. Accreditation comes from a national board and ensures that the school teaches the information necessary to practice as a nurse. You must also take a course that is going to prepare you for the NCLEX-RN, the National council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. This is the exam that all nurses must pass before they can actually get into the nursing field as a registered nurse.
There are other requirements that are going to pull you away from your online courses and put you into real-world situations. Each state has various requirements for clinical hours and experience. To be a registered nurse, you must have hands-on experience with a nursing supervisor.

It is important for you to think beyond your basic online RN degree and consider specialties that you may be interested in. Some work to receive credentials as nurses who handle pediatric patient or gerontology patients. You must check with the American Nursing Credentialing center to find the various programs that offer accredited and credentialed courses. You will be expected to complete the course and show knowledge in the specialist to receive your credentials. This is not a necessary or mandatory step for those who are interested in nursing. This simply provides education that builds on your online education to make you a stronger nurse in a specific field.

Search for schools that can help you with becoming an RN and find one that offers an online RN degree. Get started with your training today.

Four Different Types Of Nursing Jobs

Nursing jobs are extremely abundant in the job market. Although the number of graduates has been increasing year after year, there are still a lot of vacant jobs that need to be filled up. The reason for this is because there is a high demand for nurses and presently there is a shortage in certain areas of the country. Anyone who wants to become one can choose among three professions: certified nurse assistant, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, and advanced practice nurse.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Being a Certified Nursing Assistant requires the least amount of education and training over other jobs. Candidates only need to complete a six to 12 week training program and pass an examination. CNA work under the supervision of a registered nurse or a lpn. They provide basic patient care and assist patients with their daily living activities. They usually provide their supervisors with important details about the patient's health condition.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

A LPN defined as someone who provides patient care to sick or terminally-ill individuals, injured or disabled people, and the elderly. They work under the direction of registered nurses or physicians and they supervise CNA. They can be found working in all different types of healthcare facilities. Their duties and responsibilities include administrative tasks and clinical practice.
LPN Education

LPN have more education and training than CNA. To become one, candidates have to complete a one-year LPN program at a technical or vocational school. They will also need to pass a licensure exam, called the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX-PN), before they can start working in the field.

Registered Nurse (RN)

RN comprise the largest group of healthcare employees in the US. They have similar tasks as LPN, but they have more responsibilities because of their education and training. This permits them to enjoy more benefits than the two previously mentioned. They have higher salaries and better chances of being promoted.
RN Education

There are three educational methods available that allow a candidate to become a RN. First is by acquiring a diploma, which takes three years to accomplish. The diploma program can only be completed at a hospital-based school. Only candidates that have two years of working experience in nursing can take this program. The second way is by earning an associate's degree. This program focuses on technical skills and it can be completed in two years. The last one is by earning a bachelor's degree, which takes up to four or five years to finish. After completing any of these three programs, a candidate will have to pass the NCLEX-RN exam.

Advanced Practice Nurse (APN)

An APN is a RN with advanced education and training in a specialty area of nursing. An APN can be a midwife, nurse practitioner, nurse anesthesiologist, or a clinical nurse specialist. They may also have sub-specialties in the area that they specialize in.
APN Education

Among the four nursing jobs, APN jobs require the most advanced education and training. But the rewards are also satisfying since they enjoy a lot of benefits and they also have the highest salaries. To become an APN, a candidate needs to attain a graduate-level education, such as a master's or a doctoral degree. Candidates will also need to be licensed by the state and they need to acquire national board certification.

Travel Nursing ?

What is travel nursing?

Travel nursing is a career choice that allows you to take short-term positions across the country. As a licensed nurse in time with a big nursing shortage you are in demand. Hospitals and clinics are willing to pay top dollar for nurses to fill in for short periods.

Nursing Forum - travel nursing, salary and career discussion. 6000+ members.
These nursing positions usually span 3 months to a year. Depending on the duration and distance from your home, the employer will often supply housing, or alternatively, a housing subsidy.

Are these stable nursing jobs?

Some travel nursing jobs are meant to span just a short period where a full-time nurse has left and a replacement has not yet been found. However, a lot of hospitals will try to recruit a traveling nurse into a full-time position if they are happy with performance. This puts the traveling nurse in the driver's seat - you get a guaranteed short term position, with a good likelihood that you can turn it into a long-term position if you are happy with the position>

What are travel nurse salaries ?

Nursing salaries, like physician salaries, vary by experience, location and specialty. Travel nursing usually pays $24-$35 per hour, with an additional housing subsidy. Pay is higher in regions of the country with the highest cost-of-living: New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and other major metropolitan areas. California Nursing Jobs are in high demand because of the location, and it turns out that there are many open travel nursing positions in the sate.

How do I get a travel nursing job position?

Large medical facilities advertise directly for nurses. However, the easiest way of finding a position is to sign up with a nursing recruiter or travel nursing agency. The big benefit is that you can get several, well-targeted options and a guaranteed minimum quality of living conditions. The recruiter takes a good-sized fee, so your compensation might be lower than it otherwise would be, but it is usually worth it to get the best nursing job opportunities with very little searching. How do nursing licenses work across states? Each state has its own requirements for licensing nurses.

However, they all have temporary licenses that, in some states, are valid for up to a year. People with an RN nursing degree, as opposed to an LPN or LVN nursing degree, are at big advantage since there is a national board exam for RN's, but only state accreditation for LPNs or LVN s. Another benefit of working with a nursing recruiter is that they will help you get a temporary license in the state where your job is located.

What To Know About Healthcare Management Careers

When we think of a career in health care, we think of the numerous positions that exist throughout the medical community. Health care careers conjure up visions of doctors, nurses, lab technicians, and others who provide patient care. We do not often thinks about healthcare management and what careers are available.
The important patient care that the health care industry provides would not be possible without the proper supervision and administration. It is not easy for people to think of health care facilities as a business, but it is. Without the managers and administrators working to ensure the smooth delivery of health care services, and manage the budgeting and other administrative tasks, facilities would not survive.

Managing health care services involves the planning, organization, supervision, and coordination of the delivery of the services. The health manager works in hospitals, medical clinics, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities and a number of other health services. Professionally trained individuals are hired to carry out these tasks to keep the facility or organization running efficiently.

For those who are interested in working in the health field but do not want direct patient contact, managing and administration may be a good career match. This is also an area that is increasing in employment opportunities. Interested persons should research the academic programs that are designed for the organization and direction of health services.

The individual who is interested in a career in health care administration will first need to obtain the proper education. Health care services managers must posses keen aptitude in administration and business, and the have the skills to clearly and effectively communicate verbally and in writing with others.

These skills can be acquired through a good academic program. Most facilities are interested in hiring those individuals who meet the minimum education qualifications. The minimum qualifications are usually a Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Administration. For those who are interested in higher positions offered in this field, a Masters degree, or higher, in Healthcare Administration will be required.

The many advances in technology and the complexity of medical regulations required by law, can be challenging to the professionals in the field of health care services managing. The planning and supervision of the delivery of health care services in any facility, involves a team of service managers working under the direction of an administrator. The daily tasks of the manager will involve supervision of personnel, finances or budgeting, operating functions, and admissions.

Within the healthcare management field there are a number of career opportunities in clinical managing and health information managing. Clinical managers supervise specific clinical areas and must be experienced and trained in the particular area. The health information manager is responsible for the secure maintenance of patient records. Individuals interested in this area of administration must have an undergraduate or graduate degree in the management of health information. Regardless which area the individual chooses to work, this is a field that has the promise of employment growth for the future.

For this, the college or course provider usually ties up with a clinic or hospital and allots clinic time to those who join these courses.
Online colleges for nursing give their students unique IDs and passwords and send them the courseware. Sometimes the courseware is available online and students can download it. They also conduct online classes from time to time. The online nursing program website also has discussion groups and chat rooms where students can clear their doubts and discuss various course related matters. In these discussion rooms, they can meet the course lecturers and learn various things. Notes and assignments done as part of online nursing classes have to be uploaded on to the site or sent via email to specific persons. Many of the accredited online nursing schools conduct examinations and some have both online as well as offline exams. Students have the option of choosing whichever is convenient.
Accreditation Is Important

One of the most important aspects to bear in mind while selecting an online nursing degree is accreditation. It is very important to enroll in an accredited online nursing school. This is because a nursing degree will be considered valid by hospitals and clinics only if the school is accredited. Finding a good nursing position will be difficult without a proper online accredited nursing degree. Also, check whether the online nursing schools have a good tie up with a reputed hospital or clinic for providing clinical training. This is an integral and vital part of the degree and should be given enough attention.

If a person already has a degree in nursing, then it is ideal to consider becoming a Licensed Practitioner Nurse (LPN). For this online LPN nursing classes are available. After attending the class, the person has to merely appear for a test to get the license. Both online LPN and RN programs are available.
Nursing is a noble profession and there is a dearth of good nurses in the country and around the world. These online programs help more people get into the profession and help the old and the sick.

Why Should You Choose Online Nursing Classes?

There are a number of different things for you to keep in mind whenever choosing an online nursing college which can really assist you in being happy with your choice. Not all of these colleges are going to offer you the same options that are available, and some of them are just too convenient to overlook. Taking nursing courses online can assist you in advancing your career and can make you more secure in your existing position. If you choose the right online nursing college, you can complete your courses in a much faster time and have something a little better looking on your resume.

One of the reasons why this is the case, is because not every accredited nursing school that is available online is going to offer you the convenience that the others are going to offer to you. Some of them will have more of a strict schedule, and this can make it difficult for many in the nursing profession to take part in it. Most nurses tend to be very busy individuals and if they do not have a completely flexible schedule, they may not be able to keep up with it and to perform at their job at the same time.

Choosing an online nursing college that is accredited is also a very important part about making sure that you are happy with the final outcome. An RN college, for example, can assist you in improving your career if you go for your master's degree. As a matter of fact, the RN to MSN classes are among some of the most popular that are available. By taking the existing college credits that you may already have and applying them to the advancement in your education, they can help you to achieve your master's in a shorter period of time.
Another thing that you may want to consider is looking at some of the vocational schools that are available, such as the online LPN schools or perhaps even a nursing school in your local area. It is not always going to be necessary for you to take online nursing classes in order to be a registered nurse, as there are plenty of job opportunities that are available for LPN's as well. Going to one of these vocational online nursing colleges can be a great assistance to your advancing your nursing career and it can be a stepping stone to eventually going to a RN college, either online or off-line.

One thing is certain, for those of us that work in the nursing profession, the online nursing college is really going to be the only opportunity that we have of advancing our education for the long-term. Online nursing classes tend to be very flexible and they are tailored for those of us that work the long hours necessary in order to be a registered nurse. By advancing our education, we have the ability to advance in our existing job or to move into a new job that will be better suited to the abilities that we have.

Careers for Homeschoolers: Nursing

Out of the blue, I was offered a job. I am not even looking for a job! Someone just called to asked me to come to work as a nurse. I have not worked as a nurse for about 15 years, but I still have my RN license, and they tracked me down. I was offered $1100-$1400 per week - AFTER taxes, "free and clear money." They told me I would receive a $1000 bonus for starting work with their company.

Nurses are in high demand. With the population growing older, there are fewer nurses and the need is great. There are a huge variety of careers within nursing, not just hospital care. The hours can be long, but they do not have to be. The job can be physically taxing, but not always. It is an extremely flexible career that easily adapts for parents with young children. It is a great field for missionaries, and a great "foot in the door" as a great skill that can benefit any country.

Nursing requires math and science. I used algebra every day when I worked as a nurse, calculating medication and IV fluids. One small math mistake could cause a serious medication error, so the pressure was intense. In high school I completed pre-calculus, and calculus was required in college. As with any medical or science field, it is helpful to keep to the standard science courses: biology, chemistry, and physics.
Teens who are interested in medical careers can search for volunteer opportunities to research careers. I worked as a volunteer at a hospital from the age of 14. Often called Candy Stripers, hospital volunteers provide a valuable function.

While providing a service to the community, young people are also learning skills critical for medical fields. They learn about the daily sights and smells, so they are not shocked their first day of nursing practicum. They learn basic skills, like bed-making. They learn about caring for ill people, critical for determining a career in care-giving. Finally, they can learn about the wide array of careers available in the medical field, so they can know which specific medical field is right for them.
I loved being a nurse. When my son was born I continued to work one weekend a month. That allowed my husband regular experience as a primary caregiver for our baby, which was great for our marriage. When my son started little league, I could not bear to miss a single baseball game, so I quit working as a nurse. I loved my job as a homeschooler as much as I had loved being a nurse. When my children graduated, it was difficult to decide what to do!

Ultimately, I loved my job as a home educator more, and my skills homeschooling high school were "fresh." Still, I loved being a nurse, and I think it's a great career for young people who like taking care of others.

This type of nursing employment enables you to travel to different states or even different parts of the globe while on the job. Typically, a travel assignment may be good for 13 weeks or a year overseas. That means you'd be destined in one location providing medical care for an under-staffed facility. At the end of each contract, you may opt to renew or accept another assignment to a different state or country. This set-up is very exciting, challenging and very rewarding. Even as a new nurse, it is very possible to earn 15% more than your counterparts or even greater if you work as a mobile nurse.

You must be a nursing degree holder of an accredited health care program in the USA or Canada and a board passer to qualify for a travelling nurse profession. You must also possess valid licenses, certifications and permits to work in your chosen location. It would be to your advantage if your certifications are updated since travel assignments vary depending on your experience, specialty and the facility or settings you are familiar with. The facilities or units you may be assigned to may have different requirements and preferences. Obviously, you will only be given travel nursing assignments that fit your skills and experience. It is a fact that nurses are in demand across the nation and even worldwide due to under staffing. Facilities are willing to pay thousands of dollars for mobile nurses to augment the shortage of nurses. The most in demand specialties are OR, ER, ICU, PICU, Medical-Surgical, Labor & Delivery, Progressive Care and Telemetry.

Becoming a traveling nurse provides great opportunities to meet new people, enhance your medical skills, broaden your knowledge and discover new places. If you are single, adventurous and still in search for that environment that would make you settle for life, then taking travel nursing assignments will suit you perfectly. This career will take you to places you only dream of and at the same time provide you with great income and other rewarding benefits. This profession is almost similar to business travels except you don't get stuck in meetings and conference the entire duration.

Although you may be required to work overtime, living in one area for an extended period allows you the chance to explore and take pleasure in your temporary home. The best thing is that travelling nurse agencies may provide you housing benefits, travel reimbursement, food allowance, insurance (medical, dental etc.) and other bonuses. Plus, you get to choose which assignment to take, where to be destined and you get the liberty of turning down assignments you are not interested in.

Travel Tips and Nursing Apparels

Traveling with an infant brings out joy that lets you overcome the burdens of carrying the extra luggage.  Do not get me wrong - there will be extra luggage. For you, he's just little.  Do not be fooled. This little guy definitely needs more maternity nursing clothing than you do (or at least as much if you are a heavy packer anyway).

Loving the experience of breastfeeding your baby has many different reasons.  When you are single and have no babies you already wish for an extra arm or two at the airport, but when you are carrying stuff for 3 or more and one of you does not yet walk, 3 or 4 more arms would really come in handy. The right breastfeeding gear for your baby is already within your reach.  That is a reality you must bear in mind. When nursing, you do not have to carry another extra thing. Regardless of the place, nursing makes your arms free to hold your baby as long as you are prepared for it.
Your clothing basics for nursing are not that broad.  You need a nursing bra, a nursing top, and a nursing cover.  Much to your surprise, you are all set to nurse anywhere.  Take with you your nursing pillow and feel comfortable all along. It is not as bulky as it sounds.  I took my nursing pillow and hung it over the stroller in the airport and wore it on my lap on the plane.  It made an excellent barrier while in the terminal for the people that had that NEED to stroke my son's face, and it made for a comfy resting spot for him on the airplane. Regardless of the place, you can nurse your baby with these three or four items.

It is a burden to carry extra nursing stuff. Seriously, the diaper bag is full enough. Your life is not only easier because of the essential nursing clothing pieces, but also because your baby's immune system is also protected.

Traveling is a sickness -prone area for your baby. While traveling, protecting your baby's immune system through breastfeeding is the best thing to do.  I would be repeating this piece of advice to you over and over again. A vacation that's full of ease and comfort surely awaits you and your child.  For all nursing moms out there, happy travels!

The Availability Of Nurse Practitioner Jobs

It's a profession that's in high demand. Nurse practitioner jobs are available in countries that have designated this particular classification, such as Australia, the United States, and in Canada. To become a nurse practitioner (NP), one must first become a registered nurse (RN) and then continue on to more advanced education and clinical experience. A master's degree is required.

NPs typically have more responsibilities than RNs or other nurse classifications. The level of autonomy at which they practice depends in large part on where they work. Some NPs must work in tandem with a physician while others are permitted to treat patients more independently. A license is required to work as an NP, usually issued by the state nursing board or other such jurisdiction, depending on the country.
NPs often work in consultation with physicians. NPs can and do treat patients independent of physician supervision in some areas, again depending on the what the license allows for in the state or country where he or she is employed. Usually an NP will specialize in a particular are of practice, and their designation will reflect that specialty. Examples include family practice (FNP), pediatrics (PNP), neonatology (NNP), gerontology (GNP), women's health (WHNP), psychiatry and mental health (PMHNP), oncology (ONP) and acute care (ACNP).

Direct patient care is provided by NPs in any number of facilities and settings. NPs work in hospitals, clinics, private offices, operating rooms, nursing homes, and other places where health care is delivered. Duties of NPs include diagnosing, evaluating, treating, and managing illnesses and diseases. NPs can prescribe medications and order diagnostic examinations like blood work, scans, and x-rays. In some areas, NPs are authorized to perform certain types of surgeries.

Sometimes NPs may work in supervisory roles. NPs are frequently responsible for training and overseeing the work of subordinate staff who have lesser training, credentials, or clinical experience. Some NPs work as researchers, others as full time patient advocates. Some teach in nursing schools or universities.
The practice of an NP will vary depending on the area of specialization he or she chooses to work in and on the terms of employment negotiated with the particular employer. There are some standards and core philosophies, common to all NPs. A common focus is on patients as individuals, and on empowering patients through health education.
NPs are required to earn continuing education units as a condition of their licensure. This is an important requirement, as the delivery of health care continues to evolve. Not only does health care technology continually change and improve, but so to do the roles of health care providers evolve and shift.
There are a number of recruiting agencies with up to date information about the availability of nurse practitioner jobs in several locations. Information about license validity between regions is available from each licensing jurisdiction. Data about NP salaries by specialization has been compiled and is available, often from hiring agencies as well as from programs offering NP certification courses. It is a popular, high-demand profession.
